An unusual choice for a parking warden has been recruited to help ensure parents slow down when they enter Newstead Country Preschool. Henry the chicken is on patrol at the Waikato school.

The hi-vis jacket-wearing chicken doesn’t hand out fines, but she has been known to squawk and give a stern look. Henry accepts payments of hand-fed cheese for her stirling work.

Principal Tracy Trigg explained to 9-year-old Kea Kids News reporter Zuri Voschenzang, from Rukuhia School, that the very social chicken had been brought to the preschool after wandering into a friend’s lounge.

Other school chickens have followed Henry’s lead and are now often spotted in the carpark. Watch the video above to meet Henry, and see Newstead Country Preschool’s students doing their best chicken impression.
