Phillip Ingram, known as the Penny Man, is a janitor at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif. After growing up in a difficult neighborhood and challenging circumstances, he learned — and took to heart — the Golden Rule. That showed up in his life recently, when he had the idea to collect pennies and donate the proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club. In a week, he collected and donated $1,400 to the charity and learned that pennies add up. Now, the hospital has a payroll deduction plan for its 6,500 employees, thanks to the Penny Man. “Sky’s the limit. I don’t try to put a cap on it or a ceiling or floor on it. I’m just happy to do anything for anyone,” Ingram said.
