The internet is quite a mixed bag. It has its moments where one wishes to stay away from it but at times, it shares stories that make us hope for a better world around us. There are pages that aim to bring about positivity during tough times.

An instance of the same made the internet smile recently. It was posted by the page named ‘Humans of Bombay’ on its social media platforms. Known for highlighting the common man, a post went instantly viral that not only brought tears to everyone’s eyes but made them giddy with joy as well.

An autorickshaw driver named Desraj hailing from the city narrated his heartbreaking story to the page. He drives the auto number 160 near Khar danda.

He lost both of his sons quite early that left him burdened with responsibilities. One of them committed suicide two years ago. “Do beto ki chitaon ko aag laga diya hain maine, isse buri baat ek baap ke liye kya ho sakta hai,”  he said (translated: I performed the last rites of both my young sons. Nothing can be worse than this).

His family endured tough times as all the responsibility fell on him and his daughter-in-law to earn the bread for the family. It was when his granddaughter asked whether she had to drop out of school that he decided to take the matters in his own hands.

He said, “I started working long hours. I’d leave home at 6 AM and drive my auto till midnight. Only then would I be able to make Rs 10,000 a month. After spending 6000 on their school fees and stationery, I’d be left with barely 4000 to feed my family.” This brought difficulties as well. When his wife fell sick, he had to beg door-to-door for money in order to buy her medicines.

Eventually, his hard work paid off as his granddaughter scored 80% in her board exams. He was so elated that he gave out free auto rides to his customers. When she requested that she wanted to go outside the city to pursue her B.Ed, he went above and beyond to fulfill her dream. He sold their house to pay her fees, sent his family to his relatives in his native village. He lived and slept in his auto-rickshaw.

“I can’t wait for her to become a teacher so that I can hug her and say, ‘You’ve made me so proud,'” he said.

The heartwarming story tugged at netizens’ heartstrings. It was evident how moved they were in the comments section.

“He is an inspiration to so many who always think that their life is full of sorrow and struggle and remain unhappy,” one user chimed in. Another one added, “Gosh…. What a difficult life people live…. And show such splendid courage all the same.”

Indeed, it takes exemplary courage to rise from adversity and come forward to make a difference. Desraj has proven it to the world and will be an inspiration for a long time to come.
