A 14-year-old in Virginia lost power during an ice storm that gripped most of the nation recently, and started cutting firewood to keep his family warm. But he soon turned those efforts in a charitable direction, cutting firewood for neighbors.

The story, as told by NBC12 in Richmond, involves 14-year-old Eric Edwards of Dinwiddie, Virginia, who started cutting firewood once the power went out in his house.

“We were going to have to go out and split all this wood and stuff,” he explained to the TV station. “Probably just run the heat off the fireplace.”

Edwards and his family drove around to find more wood to keep their home fires burning, and determined there was a call to action in the situation.

“We were going down the road and we found more to split,” Edwards said. “So we were like, ‘Oh this in the road, so we can help the people and get it out of the roadway.’”

He, along with other family members, cleared roadways in the area of wood. Then, Tammy Edwards, Eric’s mom, found online posts from neighbors who were looking for firewood.

“There’s a couple of them saying that they didn’t have wood and they had a fireplace,” she said. “Some of them mentioned they didn’t have money.”

Eric answered this call for help by collecting, splitting, loading and delivering wood to those who needed it.

“What if the people have disabilities and stuff?” he observed. “They can’t really do this and they don’t have the money to go and get wood so I was like we’ll go and get them wood too because it’s not too hard to chop it all and have a little bit to give to people.”

Edwards added that his firewood delivery service was appreciated by those whose homes he visited.

“They had a lot of thanks because I know they were in their house cold,” he noted. “When we showed up to that to give them wood and stuff and help them with stuff, they were like, ‘Wow we didn’t expect any of this.’”

“Not many people do it,” he said of people going out of their way to help others, “so if you help, maybe you will get help later on in life.”
